Overview
NSU offers a variety of time off options to support employees throughout different stages of employment, including vacation or annual leave, sick leave, holidays, and other approved leaves.
Annual Leave
Academic & Administrative Faculty
Full-time faculty and administrative employees on 12-month (鈥淎鈥) contracts earn two days of annual leave per month, totaling 24 days per year. Faculty on 9-month (鈥淏鈥) contracts do not accrue annual leave. Faculty with less than full-time FTE status accrue leave on a prorated basis.
Classified Staff
Annual leave accrues based on years of service. Full-time employees earn between 10 and 14 hours per month, depending on their length of service. New employees may begin using annual leave after six months of full-time employment.
Letter of Appointment
Employees appointed under a Letter of Appointment do not accrue annual leave.
Carryover and Excess Leave
Academic & Administrative Faculty
A maximum of 48 days of annual leave may be carried over from one fiscal year to the next. Any leave accrued above this limit at the end of the fiscal year will be forfeited. To avoid forfeiture, submit annual leave requests in Workday by June 30th (last day of fiscal year).
Classified Staff
Classified employees may carry over a maximum of 240 hours (30 days) of annual leave from one calendar year to the next. Annual leave accrued in excess of this limit must be used on or before December 31 or will be forfeited. To avoid forfeiture, employees should submit leave requests in Workday no later than October 15.
Annual leave in excess of the carryover limit that is requested by October 15 but denied by a supervisor is eligible for payout. Eligible employees will automatically receive payment for unused leave by January 31. Additional details are available in the .
Payout at Separation
Academic & Administrative Faculty
Faculty on an 鈥淎鈥 contract who resign, retire, or move to a 鈥淏鈥 contract will receive payment for unused annual leave up to 48 days, unless instructed in writing to use leave prior to the end of employment.
Classified Staff
Classified employees who separate from state service after completing at least six months of employment will receive payment for any unused annual leave in accordance with state policy.
Sick Leave
Sick leave may be used for:
- Personal illness or injury
- Care of a family member for illness, injury, or medical, optometry, or dental appointments
- Death in the family
Academic & Administrative Faculty
Full-time employees receive 30 days of sick leave upon hire. After the first year, sick leave accrues at a rate of two days per month.
Classified Staff
Sick leave accrues at a rate of 10 hours per month for full-time employees and may be used as soon as it is earned.
Letter of Appointment
Sick leave is not accrued under a Letter of Appointment. Employees should consult with their supervisor regarding available options if leave is needed.
Carryover and Excess Leave
Academic & Administrative Faculty
A maximum of 768 hours (96 days) may be carried forward from one fiscal year to the next.
Classified Staff
Classified employees may accrue up to 720 hours (90 days) of sick leave. Once this maximum is reached, only one-half of unused sick leave accrued during the year may be carried forward. The remaining half is transferred to a separate account known as the sick leave bank, or special sick leave, and is banked annually in December.
Payout at Separation
Academic & Administrative Faculty
Unused sick leave is not paid out to academic or administrative faculty. All accrued sick leave is forfeited upon separation.
Classified Staff
Classified employees who separate from state service after a minimum of 10 years of service, through no fault of their own, may be eligible for payment of accrued sick leave in excess of 240 hours (30 days), subject to the following maximum amounts:
Years of Service
10-15 years: $2,500
15-20 years: $4,000
20-25 years: $6,000
25 or more: $8,000
Requesting Leave
Academic & Administrative Faculty
Annual and Sick Leave may be requested in half-day or full-day increments and must be approved in advance by your supervisor or other appropriate administrative officer. Requests are submitted through Workday. The 鈥鈥 job aid is available for guidance.
Classified Staff
Annual and Sick Leave may be requested in minimum increments of 15 minutes and must be approved by the employee鈥檚 supervisor. Leave requests are submitted through Workday. The 鈥鈥 job aid is available for employees who need assistance.
Bereavement Leave
Academic & Administrative Faculty
Employees may use up to ten (10) working days of sick leave following the death of an individual within the third degree of relationship. Requests to use additional accrued sick leave beyond the ten-day limit must be submitted in writing to the appropriate appointing authority and are subject to approval at their discretion, in accordance with the .
Classified Staff
Eligible employees may use up to five (5) working days of sick leave following the death of an immediate family member. Additional time may be approved by the appropriate appointing authority in cases involving extended travel, in accordance with 麻豆原创 Administrative Code .
For purposes of bereavement leave, immediate family includes the employee鈥檚 parents, spouse, children, siblings, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, as well as corresponding in-law and step-family relationships.
Holidays
麻豆原创 observes 12 paid holidays each year in accordance with the State of 麻豆原创 holiday schedule.

Leave of Absence
The Benefits and Wellness coordinator provides assistance and administers leaves of absence for university employees.
Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
Eligible employees may take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave each year for qualifying family and medical reasons under federal law.
Paid Family Leave (PFL)
Eligible employees may take up to 8 weeks of paid, job-protected leave at 50% of their regular wage for qualifying family, medical, or military-related needs.
Jury Duty, Civil Leave, and Military Leave
Eligible employees may receive job-protected time off for jury service, civic duties, or military obligations, in accordance with applicable law.
