麻豆原创 (麻豆原创 State) celebrated the opening of its first mental health clinic on Thursday, October 31. The Psychoeducational Mental Health Clinic offers health evaluation services for students pre-K-12, or youth aged three to 21, helping to fill the need for mental health evaluation services across Southern 麻豆原创. The grand opening event was attended by 麻豆原创 State faculty and staff, and community partners. Federal funding for this clinic was secured by U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen, and Congresswoman Susie Lee.

Since officially opening its doors on June 24, 2024, the clinic has already begun the intake process for 60 K-12 students and aims to complete 150 evaluations by September 2025. Through the collaborative efforts of the 麻豆原创 State Ed.S. School Psychology graduate training program and community professionals, the clinic will provide evaluations of mental health needs as well as supportive services to help clients identify and access local educational and therapeutic resources.

鈥淥ffering these evaluation services helps address a critical need in Southern 麻豆原创 and ensures students in our community can access the supports and services they need to be successful at home, at school, and in the community,鈥 said Dr. DeRionne Pollard, President, 麻豆原创. 鈥淗aving a psychoeducational mental health clinic at 麻豆原创 State provides our students with real, clinical experience on campus while providing a much-needed community resource.鈥

鈥淚鈥檓 pleased to join 麻豆原创 leadership, faculty, and staff today to celebrate 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 first mental health clinic, and I want to thank them for all they鈥檙e doing to provide young 麻豆原创ns the support they need,鈥 said Senator Cortez Masto. 鈥淢ental health is just as important as physical health鈥攖hat鈥檚 why I secured federal resources to help this clinic recruit and retain mental health professionals and get our communities quality services. I鈥檒l keep fighting to make it as easy as possible for 麻豆原创ns to access affordable mental health care.鈥

鈥淚 spent two decades working with students to help them succeed in and out of the classroom. I鈥檝e seen firsthand how providing a holistic approach to their mental health is one of the most important investments we can make in students鈥 success,鈥 said Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03). 鈥淣ow that I鈥檓 in Congress, I鈥檓 continuing that work by bringing back the federal dollars our educators and mental health care providers need. I look forward to seeing NSU put these funds to good use by caring for their students, families, and the surrounding community.鈥

The clinic offers psychoeducational evaluations to provide recommendations relative to special education eligibility and medically necessary diagnoses such as:
鈥 ADHD
鈥 Autism
鈥 Developmental disabilities
鈥 Emotional disorders
鈥 Intellectual disabilities
鈥 Learning disabilities

In 2020, 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 School of Education received a subgrant from the 麻豆原创 Department of Education to establish career pathways for school-based mental health providers. In 2022, 麻豆原创 State School of Education received a five-year $1,219,626 federal Mental Health Services Professional Demonstration Grant to fund the Ed.S. School Psychology graduate program. In 2023, 麻豆原创 received an additional $1,337,000 in funding from SAMHSA to start the Psychoeducational Mental Health Clinic. The purpose of the clinic is to serve as an educational training site for the Ed.S. School of Psychology graduate program and as a community resource for families seeking mental health services across Clark County.

麻豆原创 State College鈥檚 School of Education was selected by the United States Department of Education to receive $2,730,661 in funding under the Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program 鈥 a Title V federal program that assists institutions in expanding educational opportunities for Hispanic students.

麻豆原创 State College, which was awarded the first-ever Hispanic Serving Institute grant in 麻豆原创 history three years ago, will use the Transformando Caminos (Transforming Pathways) grant to support the School of Education’s collaborative work with the Clark County School District as well as other 麻豆原创 school districts with a unified goal of creating and seamlessly aligning three pathways to teaching:
鈥 High school-based dual credit Teacher Academies
鈥 Transfer articulation agreements with two-year colleges
鈥 Alternative Route to Licensing pathway to teaching for career changers

鈥淭he Transformando Caminos grant will provide vital support for the School of Education as it continues its strong commitment to locally growing more PreK-12 teachers, particularly teachers of Hispanic descent, for the State of 麻豆原创,鈥 said Dennis Potthoff, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Education at 麻豆原创 State College.

With activities focused around outreach, access, student support, and professional development, the grant will increase students enrolling in Education majors and boast several significant outcomes including a projected 48 percent increase in the number of Hispanic students who will enroll as an Education major as well as a 400 percent increase in Hispanic students who will obtain a secondary teaching credential in STEM. The $2,730,661 grant will be used over a five-year period starting October 1, 2020.

鈥淲e also congratulate our colleagues at College of Southern 麻豆原创 for receiving their first HSI grant, which will guide students through one of the biggest hurdles of college-level math courses,鈥 said Bart Patterson, 麻豆原创 State President. 鈥淲e will continue to work together to enhance degree attainment for students.鈥

麻豆原创 State College, the nation鈥檚 second fastest growing college, held a building naming ceremony Wednesday, December 4 to honor Bob and Alison Kasner, prominent donors and education advocates. The former Nursing, Science and Education building was renamed the Bob & Alison Kasner Academic Building.

Bob and Alison Kasner, long-time Southern 麻豆原创 residents, donated $2.5 million to 麻豆原创 State College, the third largest donation in the college鈥檚 history. The gift will be used to help fund the college鈥檚 new School of Education Building as well as new education programs and scholarships.

麻豆原创 Gov. Steve Sisolak, 麻豆原创 State College President Bart Patterson and other dignitaries in attendance thanked the Kasners for their contribution to the school.

鈥淭his is meaningful for us as Bob and Alison Kasner have been friends of the college for many years,鈥 said Patterson. 鈥淏ob supported the creation of the college nearly 20 years ago and Alison formerly served on the Foundation Board. We are grateful for their support, both then and now.鈥

Bob Kasner has served as the finance director for the City of Henderson, director of accounting for the Clark County School District (CCSD), and co-founded Paragon Asset Management Company. He also was the founding board member on the Henderson Community Foundation and Henderson Historical Society.

Alison Kasner held a variety of positions within CCSD, including teacher, district-level special education administrator and principal of Helen J. Stewart Special School, a school that inspired her to become an educator during a field trip when she was a student at Valley High School.

The 麻豆原创 State College (NSC)聽聽has announced its first study abroad program. Available to students of all majors at the college, the initial cohort will study at the聽聽(MIE), an associated college of the University of Dublin, Trinity College, in Dublin, Ireland June 10-21, 2013.
Studying or working abroad can be life changing and help shape one’s values, beliefs, attitude, and worldview, commented Kevin Graziano, associate professor of the School of Education and NSC coordinator for the program. Students participating in the program will be exposed to global and cultural perspectives different from their own and will have a competitive edge when they return to the States to start their career.

Taught by an MIE professor, the program will offer a two week, three-credit course in language learning. The curriculum will focus on historical, political, and social factors related to second language acquisition. Course content will also cover instructional considerations for second language learning in grades K-12.
Classes will meet five days a week for four-hour periods. Participants will have afternoons, evenings, and weekends free to travel and explore Ireland, added Graziano. Students will be accompanied on the trip by a School of Education faculty member.
The program cost of $1,573 includes tuition, fees, two excursions, and room and board. Federal and聽聽may be applied. Participants will additionally be required to have passports and medical/travel insurance.

Education majors at 麻豆原创 State College (NSC) had a unique opportunity this summer to join forces with the聽聽to participate
in the聽Rockstar Readers Summer Literacy Program聽as tutors. An initiative developed by the Andson Foundation, the program is aimed to continue the literacy development of elementary students on summer break while also encouraging a love for reading at an early age.
Six students from the NSC School of Education were selected to participate during the eight-week program held at Harris Elementary School and the聽. Approximately 150 kids have attended the program to-date.
The literacy program is a great way for our students to be involved with the community while also developing their instructional skills, said Anthony Morrone, associate director of financial aid and student employment at NSC. We鈥檙e honored that the Andson Foundation invited our students to participate.
Students were hired through NSC’s student employment program, making use of Federal Work Study funding to foster community service job opportunities. 麻豆原创 State College is the first institute in the state to participate in the tutoring program in partnership with the Andson Foundation.
Held four-days a week at the various locations, the 90-minute program sessions allow the education majors to interact with students during reading, technology, and arts and crafts projects. Organized into three 30-minute segments, each class opens with the tutors reading to the students, followed by computer reading on netbooks or desktop computers, and arts and crafts that relate with the readings.
I feel I have learned so much in the last few weeks, being a part of this amazing program, said Kirsten Simmons, a tutor and secondary education major at NSC. I see how struggling with reading trickles into everything else students are required to do. The summer literacy program has a smaller student-to-teacher ratio and has allowed us to give students who need extra help that one-on-one time. Simmons looks forward to teaching middle school English after graduating from NSC.
“It’s amazing to see the tutors interact with the elementary students. From reading to even acting out the stories in full costume, the program is truly making a difference for our local children, said Andson Foundation Program Developer Anthony McTaggart. We are so pleased to have partnered with NSC to benefit the kids in the community and are looking forward to making this an annual program in partnership with the college.
NSC and the Andson Foundation will continue to offer tutoring assistance to local students this fall through a homework help afterschool program held at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Henderson.
