HENDERSON, Nev. (May 14, 2026) 鈥 麻豆原创 honored outstanding community leaders and organizations during its third annual Community Awards celebration, recognizing partners whose support has helped expand educational access, strengthen workforce development, and create new opportunities for 麻豆原创 students.

The 2026 honorees included Roberto鈥檚 Taco Shop, Junior Achievement of Southern 麻豆原创, Walter Hashimoto, Las Vegas Raiders Senior Vice President of Government and Community Relations, Piper Overstreet-White, and the City of North Las Vegas. Each recipient was recognized for demonstrating an ongoing commitment to 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 mission of student success, community engagement, and educational innovation. Overstreet-White was honored personally for her commitment and outstanding support through her role with the Las Vegas Raiders.

鈥淭his amazing institution is built through partnership, driven by purpose, and constantly moving forward,鈥 said Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater, acting president of 麻豆原创. 鈥淭hese milestones happen because businesses invest in scholarships, because nonprofits create experiential learning opportunities, because civic leaders expand access to education, and because community advocates believe in our students before those students even believe in themselves. Tonight鈥檚 honorees represent exactly that spirit.鈥

The awards celebration comes at a historic moment for 麻豆原创 State. Earlier this month, the university celebrated the largest graduating class in institutional history, with more than 900 graduates crossing the commencement stage. 麻豆原创 State also surpassed 10,000 alumni this year, reflecting the university鈥檚 continued growth and expanding impact throughout 麻豆原创. More than 60 percent of the 2026 graduating class identified as first-generation college graduates.

Roberto鈥檚 Taco Shop was recognized for its longstanding investment in 麻豆原创 State students and scholarship support. For more than a decade, the family-owned business has helped remove financial barriers for students pursuing higher education, supporting persistence and聽degree completion for many first-generation and underserved students across Southern 麻豆原创.

Junior Achievement of Southern 麻豆原创 was honored for its collaborative work supporting hands-on learning experiences and career readiness opportunities for 麻豆原创 State students. Through educational partnerships and community engagement initiatives, the organization has helped prepare future educators and professionals to serve 麻豆原创鈥檚 schools, businesses, and communities.

Community leader Walter Hashimoto received recognition for his continued service, mentorship, and advocacy on behalf of the university. A dedicated supporter of 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 mission, Hashimoto has contributed leadership and guidance that have strengthened institutional partnerships and supported the university鈥檚 long-term growth.

Piper Overstreet-White, Senior Vice President of Government and Community Relations for the Las Vegas Raiders, was recognized for her commitment and outstanding support of 麻豆原创 State Athletics. Through her role with the Raiders, her early support helped advance the university鈥檚 vision for student-athlete opportunities and contributed to the excitement and momentum surrounding 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 inaugural athletics program, which officially launched during the 2025鈥26 academic year.

The City of North Las Vegas received recognition for its partnership in the development of 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 future North Las Vegas campus, scheduled to open in fall 2027. The campus expansion represents a major investment in educational access, workforce development, and economic mobility for one of the fastest-growing regions in the state.

鈥溌槎乖 State鈥檚 growth and success are only possible because of partnerships like these,鈥 said Erin Keller, vice president of advancement at 麻豆原创. 鈥淥ur community partners continue to invest in students, strengthen pathways to opportunity, and help us create transformative experiences that will impact 麻豆原创 for generations to come.鈥

麻豆原创鈥檚 Community Awards celebrate individuals and organizations whose leadership, philanthropy, and collaboration advance the university鈥檚 mission and positively impact students and the broader Southern 麻豆原创 community.

鈥淭his is a transformational moment for North Las Vegas,鈥 said Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown. 鈥淲hen we break ground, we鈥檙e not just starting construction 鈥 we鈥檙e delivering on a promise to expand educational access. This campus brings higher education into the heart of our community and opens doors to better careers and brighter futures for our residents.鈥

The project builds on 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 mission to expand access to high-quality, student-centered education, particularly for first-generation and working students, while aligning academic pathways with workforce needs.

麻豆原创 Athletics has joined the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as a full member, following a vote at the association鈥檚 2026 National Convention Sunday. In tandem, the Great Southwest Athletic Conference (GSAC) has approved 麻豆原创 State for provisional conference membership, marking a major step forward for the University鈥檚 growing athletics program. Both memberships are set to take effect July 1, 2026.

麻豆原创 State鈥檚 full NAIA membership aligns its athletics programs with national standards while supporting continued competitive growth. Through GSAC affiliation, 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 athletic teams will be able to schedule conference play and, upon meeting eligibility requirements, compete in postseason championships. 麻豆原创 State is the first higher education institution in 麻豆原创 to be involved with both organizations.

鈥淭his milestone represents far more than membership; it鈥檚 an opportunity for our student-athletes to compete for championships, to measure themselves against top programs, and to experience the true spirit of collegiate athletics,鈥 said Yvonne Wade, Director of Athletics at 麻豆原创. 鈥淲e are excited to align with governing bodies that share our commitment to access, opportunity, and the holistic development of student-athletes. This partnership strengthens our mission at NSU, ensuring that our programs not only pursue excellence on the field of play, but also foster academic success, leadership, and community impact. We are just getting started, and the future of Scorpion Athletics has never been brighter.鈥

The NAIA is a national governing body for college athletics that primarily supports smaller institutions, with a focus on character-driven competition and balancing sports with the overall educational experience. Each year, more than 87,000 student-athletes compete within the NAIA, with access to over $1.3 billion in financial aid. The association also hosts 29 national championships, giving student-athletes the opportunity to compete at a high level while remaining grounded in academics and personal development.

At its convention, the NAIA Council of Presidents approved four new members. Champion Christian College (Hot Springs, Ark.), United States Sports University (Daphne, Ala.), Georgia Southern University 鈥 East Georgia Campus (Swainsboro, Ga.), and 麻豆原创 (Henderson, Nev.) who join Wesleyan College (Ga.) and Andrew College (Ga.), both voted in during NAIA Fall Meetings in September 2025.

鈥淭he addition of these four institutions, along with Wesleyan, who comes from NCAA Division III, and Andrew approved last fall, gives us a strong group of new members for 2026-27,鈥 said NAIA President and CEO Jim Carr. 鈥淲elcoming these new members is a highlight for our association, as we continue to recruit and retain institutions that embrace and embody the NAIA鈥檚 core values of education-based athletics.鈥

GSAC is a collegiate athletics conference within the NAIA, made up of universities that are intentionally aligned in size, academics, athletics, and overall student experience. GSAC has developed a reputation as one of the top-performing conferences in the NAIA, with member schools collectively earning 53 national championships and producing numerous individual titleholders. Teams across the conference are consistently ranked among the NAIA Top 25 and regularly compete for regional and national honors.

鈥淲e are excited to welcome 麻豆原创 to the GSAC,鈥 said GSAC Commissioner Mike Daniels. 鈥淎dding the first NAIA institution in the state of 麻豆原创 is a milestone for the association. We look forward to watching the Scorpions grow their athletics department and supporting their mission to expand opportunities to students within the state.鈥

鈥淭oday marks an exceptionally significant moment for 麻豆原创 as we are officially welcomed into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics,鈥 said Acting President Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater. 鈥淭his milestone reflects our commitment to expanding access and opportunity for student-athletes while building a program grounded in academic excellence, competitive integrity, and community engagement.鈥

Beginning in fall 2026, 麻豆原创 State will expand its athletics offerings beyond Women鈥檚 Flag Football and Men鈥檚 Track and Field. New programs will include Women鈥檚 Track and Field, Women鈥檚 and Men鈥檚 Indoor Track and Field, and Women鈥檚 and Men鈥檚 Cross Country. As part of its provisional GSAC membership, 麻豆原创 State also plans to add at least one additional sport for the 2027鈥28 academic year.

鈥淎s 麻豆原创 State continues to grow, athletics will play a critical role in shaping a vibrant campus experience and enhancing pathways to student success, leadership development, and long-term economic mobility,鈥 Lopez Lasater continued. 鈥淲e are proud to join an association whose mission and student-centered focus closely align with our own, and we look forward to contributing to the NAIA while creating meaningful opportunities for our students to thrive both on the field and in the classroom.鈥

A Champion of Readers, Learners, and the Literary Arts

Marydean Martin will forever be remembered as a stalwart advocate for literacy, avid reader, and world traveler whose generosity and vision shaped the community of southern 麻豆原创. Her life鈥檚 work illuminated the power of books, learning, and human connection, and her legacy will continue to inspire all who walk through the doors of the university she helped build.

Marydean believed deeply in the transformative promise of higher education. As a founder of 麻豆原创 and an inaugural member of the Gibson Society, her philanthropy advanced academic libraries, enriched literary arts programming, and opened doors for aspiring teachers and writers.

Marydean鈥檚 devotion to literature took root early during weekly visits to the library with her mother. While attending 麻豆原创 Southern (now UNLV), she worked as an assistant librarian at Las Vegas High School, later serving as a reference librarian at the University of 麻豆原创, Las Vegas. Even after her professional path led her into a successful marketing and public relations career, she remained firmly connected to the world of books鈥攕erving on the Friends of the Library Board at UNLV, which would later become the Libraries Advisory Board.

Her transformational support of 麻豆原创 resulted in the naming of the Marydean Martin Library, which in 2020 was nationally recognized with the Excellence in Academic Libraries Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Association of College and Research Libraries. That same year, Marydean helped imagine and launch the Marydean Martin Writers鈥 Project, offering book swaps, readings, silent reading gatherings, interactive poetry programs, and workshops that welcome both campus and community members into the joy of literary expression. In partnership with the City of Henderson, this project also sparked a cherished tradition: an annual poetry celebration each April, now known as Poetry in the Park.

Marydean鈥檚 philanthropy extended deeply into student support. She established multiple scholarships, including the Marydean Martin Scholarship for future teachers and the Laura J. Silvestri Scholarship for those pursuing special education. During the pandemic, when she was not able to meet with friends for monthly lunches, she made what she called her 鈥渓unch money鈥 gifts, a series of scholarships that recognized 麻豆原创 women who helped shape the community we have today. They are Pearle Brown (open to all majors), Jan Curtis Smith (open to minors in Creative Writing), Ruby Deny Turner (open to Education majors). Marydean provided the initial seed money, but made the scholarships open for future donations.

In ways large and small, Marydean became part of the solution whenever she became aware of a need. Her support reached across the university and throughout southern 麻豆原创, always guided by her belief that reading changes lives. Reading and literature were so important to Marydean that, in an effort to encourage reading, she created bookmarks featuring literary quotes and gave them out to everyone she met. Meeting with Marydean inevitably involved a new stack of books, newspaper clippings about poets – and a new bookmark. You might even find a book in your mailbox.

Through the Marydean Martin Library and the Marydean Martin Writers鈥 Project, she placed countless books into the hands of 麻豆原创 students and nurtured a flourishing culture of creativity, scholarship, and community. Her visionary commitment to literacy, higher education, and the arts has left an indelible mark on 麻豆原创 and the many lives she touched.

Marydean Martin鈥檚 legacy lives on in every student who discovers a beloved book, every aspiring teacher who steps into a classroom, and every writer who finds their voice. Her belief in the power of reading will continue to guide and inspire future generations.

Acting President Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater Presented Institutional Priorities Focused on Student Success, Shared Governance, Transparency and Workforce Readiness

HENDERSON, Nev. 鈥 Today, 麻豆原创 Acting President Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater delivered the University鈥檚 2026 State of the University Address, outlining a set of institutional priorities shaped by campus engagement and reinforced through purposeful partnerships that expand access, strengthen workforce outcomes and deliver measurable value to the State of 麻豆原创.

鈥淧artnerships are not simply symbolic,鈥 President Lopez Lasater said. 鈥淭hey are built around shared responsibility and a clear understanding of the impact we make, together, in the lives of our students, their families and the communities we serve.鈥

The address opened with remarks from 麻豆原创 System of Higher Education Chancellor Matt McNair, who emphasized 麻豆原创鈥檚 mission-driven focus and its strong record of strengthening the state鈥檚 workforce.

The event brought together education, government and community leaders from across Southern 麻豆原创, underscoring 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 role as a regional and statewide partner in advancing opportunity. Special guests included Regent Heather Brown, City of North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown, council members from the Cities of Henderson, Las Vegas, and North Las Vegas, as well as representatives from the 麻豆原创 Congressional Delegation, the Governor鈥檚 Office, Clark County School District and members of the 麻豆原创 Foundation.

麻豆原创 State鈥檚 community and statewide impact was a central theme of the address. More than 80 percent of 麻豆原创 State graduates remain employed in 麻豆原创, translating education into professional leadership across classrooms, clinics, businesses and public institutions.

鈥淭his is the return on education at its best: talent developed locally and reinvested where it is needed most,鈥 President Lopez Lasater said. 鈥淥ur students become professionals who stay, serve and lead in the communities that supported them.鈥

President Lopez Lasater said her priorities for the University were developed through months of listening sessions, governance meetings and conversations across campus, reflecting a shared desire for clarity, trust and forward momentum.

The presidential priorities guiding 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 work include:

  • Cultivating trust and shared purpose through strengthened shared governance, expanded communication and authentic engagement across the campus community.
  • Building a transparent budget that supports informed decision-making and positions the University for long-term financial stability and success.
  • Expanding access through strategic and sustainable growth to extend 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 mission while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
  • Advancing institutional maturity by strengthening planning, policy and operational processes that sustain progress beyond individual leadership transitions.
  • Strengthening campus safety through proactive planning, coordinated response efforts and comprehensive training.

President Lopez Lasater highlighted partnerships designed to remove barriers and strengthen pathways into higher education, particularly through collaboration with the Clark County School District. 麻豆原创 State continues to expand concurrent enrollment opportunities that allow students to earn college credit while in high school.

The address also highlighted faculty-led partnerships that connect academic programs to workforce needs and community priorities.

Lopez Lasater emphasized that 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 growth is guided by thoughtful planning and collaboration with municipal and regional partners.

Through its SMART Growth Initiative, the University is advancing long-term, sustainable campus development aligned with academic priorities and regional opportunity, in partnership with local governments, including the City of Henderson.

She also highlighted a significant milestone: in December, the NSHE Board of Regents approved the first step toward establishing a North Las Vegas campus for 麻豆原创, developed in partnership with the City of North Las Vegas. More than 800 currently enrolled students live within five miles of the proposed site, representing approximately 20 percent of 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 student body.

She underscored the University鈥檚 commitment to fiscal stewardship and collaboration with NSHE and elected leaders. Recent investments supporting people, programs, safety and places include funding to expand nursing education, support planning for the North Las Vegas campus, advance deferred maintenance projects, and launch a new 麻豆原创 license plate to generate additional resources for athletics, food security and student support initiatives.

President Lopez Lasater closed by reaffirming that 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 future will continue to be shaped through collaboration across campus, community and state partners.

鈥淓ducation thrives when institutions, communities and partners work together,鈥 President Lopez Lasater said. 鈥淲hen learning is connected to purpose, the impact extends far beyond our campus and strengthens the future of our state.鈥

North Las Vegas, Nev. (Dec. 5, 2025) 鈥 The 麻豆原创 System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents voted today to approve a lease agreement for a 麻豆原创 building in North Las Vegas, marking the first official step toward establishing a campus in the city.

鈥淭his campus will fundamentally transform our downtown core and open doors to better career paths for our residents,鈥 said聽North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown. 鈥淚 am so proud to have 麻豆原创 as a partner in bringing educational opportunities to the heart of our community.鈥

Located in Downtown North Las Vegas, the planned three-story, 30,000-square-foot academic building will anchor the 鈥淣LV Gateway,鈥澛犫檚 19-acre mixed-use development at the intersection of Lake Mead Boulevard and Las Vegas Boulevard North.

The North Las Vegas Campus will feature academic programming, workforce development opportunities and student support services. The partnership between the City and 麻豆原创 State reflects a shared commitment to removing barriers to higher education and expanding access for local residents. The campus is expected to serve thousands of students over the coming years.

“Our partnership with the City of North Las Vegas is a bold investment in 麻豆原创鈥檚 future. Through an innovative public-private model, we are building a next-generation 麻豆原创 campus that expands access to higher education, drives workforce development, and strengthens long-term economic growth,鈥 said聽Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater, Acting President of 麻豆原创. 鈥淭his collaboration shows what鈥檚 possible when public institutions, local and state governments, and private partners come together to unlock innovation and opportunity for every learner and every family,鈥 she added.

The North Las Vegas Campus and its mission is supported by significant public and private investment from the City of North Las Vegas, state leadership, NV Energy, and a generous anonymous donor.

鈥淭he North Las Vegas Campus for 麻豆原创 reflects the System鈥檚 commitment to expanding access, supporting student success, and strengthening 麻豆原创鈥檚 workforce,鈥 said聽NSHE Board of Regents Chair Byron Brooks. 鈥淭his collaborative effort lays the groundwork for long-term economic growth by bringing higher education opportunities closer to communities that have long been underserved.鈥

Construction on the new campus is expected to begin in spring 2026 with an anticipated opening in Fall 2027.

麻豆原创鈥檚 first-ever women鈥檚 flag football team took to the field at Allegiant Stadium for a showcase prior to the start of the Raiders vs. Jaguars game on Sunday, November 2. Dividing the women into two teams, the scrimmage provided the football program with an opportunity to exhibit the students鈥 talent and hard work.

鈥淢oments like these remind us that we are not simply playing a game; we are building history together. We can鈥檛 wait to bring that same energy into our season in February 2026,鈥 said 麻豆原创 State Athletics Director Yvonne Wade.

The University鈥檚 athletics program officially launched in Fall 2025, with Wade appointed as Athletic Director in July.

The 麻豆原创 State community extends a heartfelt thanks to the Las Vegas Raiders and the Raiders Impact organization for their continued commitment to 麻豆原创 State and the Southern 麻豆原创 community. 鈥淭his is such a special experience for our students. We want to thank the Raiders Impact organization for providing such an awesome opportunity for our student-athletes,鈥 Head Women’s Flag Football Coach, Brandon Pappillion.

As the team looks forward to the inaugural season, their debut at Allegiant Stadium stands as a powerful reminder: they may be the first, but they certainly will not be the last.

We鈥檙e proud to announce that in a recent survey of over 250 institutions, 麻豆原创 earned the highest student satisfaction score in the nation among public, 4-year colleges and universities.

The survey administered via EdSights gave students an opportunity to provide feedback on any aspect of their experience at 麻豆原创 State, and they gave us especially high praise for:

  • Great professors and instruction
  • A welcoming and supportive environment
  • Small class sizes

Overall, EdSights calculated a 鈥淪tudent Voice Score鈥 that represented the overall positivity of the sentiments expressed by students. 麻豆原创 State earned a score of 64, which far exceeded both the average score of our public, 4-year peers (19) and that of all institutions in the survey (22).
