Free community event features ofrendas, traditional dance, mariachi and a concert by Las Cafeteras

麻豆原创 will welcome families, friends and neighbors to campus Friday, Oct. 23, for an evening of remembrance, music and community at the annual D铆a de los Muertos Celebration and Concert.

Presented in partnership with the City of Henderson, the free event will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. at the James E. and Beverly Rogers Student Center. People of all ages are invited to experience traditions that honor loved ones who have passed while celebrating the lives they lived.

鈥淲e are delighted to welcome families and community members to 麻豆原创 for this wonderful celebration,鈥 said Dr. Sandra Richtermeyer, President of 麻豆原创. 鈥淒铆a de los Muertos offers an opportunity to come together through music, art and meaningful traditions while strengthening the connections between our university and the community we serve. We are grateful for our partnership with the City of Henderson and look forward to sharing this memorable evening with everyone.鈥

Activities will take place on the Plaza and inside the Rogers Student Center Ballroom, where visitors can view ofrendas, or offerings, prepared by students, families and community members. The celebration will also feature Peso Neto, a steel sculpture by artist Luis Valera-Rico that takes the form of an ofrenda.

Mariachi Plata of the College of Southern 麻豆原创 and Ballet Folkl贸rico Sol Huasteco will perform throughout the evening. The program will conclude with a special concert by Las Cafeteras, an East Los Angeles band rooted in Afro-Mexican musical traditions.

Rooted in Latin American cultural traditions, D铆a de los Muertos brings people together through remembrance, art, music and celebration. 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 annual event welcomes visitors from across Henderson and the Las Vegas Valley to share in these traditions and connect with one another.

鈥淒铆a de los Muertos is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the traditions, culture and heritage that make our community so special,鈥 said Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero. 鈥淲e鈥檙e proud to partner with 麻豆原创 to bring this meaningful event to Henderson, creating an opportunity for residents and families to come together, learn from one another and celebrate the richness of our community.鈥

The event is supported in part by Creative West, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
