Academic Skills Coaching
Our trained Peer Academic Coaches will help you to:听
- Assess and identify your individual strengths and areas for growth that support your academic success
- Set clear SMART Goals that outline actionable and realistic steps towards achieving your goals
- Identify effective learning tools and campus resources to support your skill development, goal completion, or simply navigating and balancing college life.
- Check-in with you to provide support and feedback on your goal progress as well as updates about campus activities and events
Tutoring
Peer Tutors are highly trained and available in-person or online in the following formats:
- One-on-one (1:1)听tutoring allows the student to work individually with a tutor and focus on their specific questions/needs. Students can schedule 1:1 sessions in advance or drop-in, based on tutor availability. Any 1:1 session can be converted into a group session upon the student鈥檚 request as long as all students give permission to work together (specifically the student who scheduled the original appointment).
- Group听sessions involve two or more students and are used when students have a common objective/course they wish to review. Students can schedule group sessions in advance or drop-in, based on tutor availability. For example, students taking PHYS 151 from different instructors could have a group session to review similar topics or problem types. The primary advantage of group tutoring is the potential for peers to share a variety of views and information under the guidance of a tutor. Groups can also demonstrate and build cooperative attitudes and work skills; necessary requisites for the 鈥渞eal鈥 world. Lastly, group sessions can be done as scheduled appointments or as drop-in sessions.
- Tutoring Labs:听Tutoring labs are a first-come-first-serve/drop-in type of model where tutors are available to help students for a particular time period for multiple courses in a specific subject. Students can receive 1:1 or group help in the lab setting, based on student traffic and tutor availability.听For example,听Math Lab may be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays by 1-2 Math Tutors from 2-6 pm in the Dawson Lobby for drop-in help in courses ranging from Math 120-181.听This type of tutoring format was specifically designed for large in-person interactions based on the specific times and physical locations of the classes. The ASC offers specific in-person tutoring labs for select subjects (e.g. Math, Science, & Spanish) each semester pending tutor availability and space. For subjects/courses not offered in lab formats, students can schedule or drop-in for 1:1 or traditional Group sessions.
NetTutor – Canvas
The ASC has limited office hours and a limited number of peer tutors on staff. As such, the university provides extended tutoring support via a professional tutoring service called
This service is intended for if/when students cannot access ASC campus tutoring. The service is free听to all 麻豆原创 State students, available 24/7 for most subjects, and accessible via Canvas.
Embedded Course Support
In addition to traditional tutoring services, the ASC provides embedded peer support for courses with high enrollment, low pass rates, or those that serve as pathways to specific majors or graduation requirements, such as English or Math. Our program is grounded in best practices from the .
Embedded support takes the idea of tutoring to the next level. Instead of a tutor waiting for students to come to see them, the embedded peer leader:
- Attends the class with students and models positive student behaviors during class discussions/activities
- Holds weekly structured group study sessions (outside of class)
- Provides individual mentoring or tutoring sessions outside of class (varies by type of service)
- Meets regularly with the course instructor to discuss common questions or challenges that students may be experiencing in the course
Study & Learning Skills Workshops
The Academic Success Center offers research-based study and learning strategies to students and faculty/staff across campus. Please complete to request a class presentation or interactive study skills workshop for your course, student group, or department.听
Important Tips:
- Requests submitted听less than 2 weeks in advance听may not be guaranteed due to limited time for adequate staffing and preparation.听
- All workshops (excluding the ASC Services Overview) will be available for request starting Week 2听of the Fall/Spring semesters.
- We will do our best to accommodate requests on a first-come first-serve basis.
