麻豆原创鈥檚 School of Nursing Simulation Center has been granted Provisional Accreditation by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), making it the first simulation program dedicated to pre-licensure nursing education in the state of 麻豆原创 to receive this honor. The center is currently a candidate for full accreditation, which may be granted after completing two years of review by SSH. The baccalaureate degree program in nursing at 麻豆原创 State is already accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

鈥淭he Simulation Center鈥檚 Provisional Accreditation is a pivotal milestone, affirming our commitment to excellence and innovation in nursing education,鈥 said Nina Marcellus, Director of Health Sciences Lab and Simulation at 麻豆原创. 鈥淭his accolade validates our rigorous standards and paves the way for continuous improvement, ensuring that our simulation lab remains at the forefront of preparing future healthcare professionals with the highest quality training.鈥

Located on the College of Southern 麻豆原创鈥檚 (CSN) Henderson campus in 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 own wing, the university鈥檚 cutting-edge simulation center features human-like manikins. These manikins simulate various scenarios relating to patient care, healthcare needs, and hospital visits to help prepare students for their careers in the field. Additionally, the program utilizes trained actors in roles as patients in simulation encounters throughout the curriculum to help students further develop important interpersonal skills such as emotional intelligence and cultural humility.

鈥淎s future registered nurses, having access to this state-of-the-art simulation center allows us to hone developing knowledge and skills, build confidence in clinical practice, and prepare for real-world clinical situations in a safe and dynamic environment,鈥 said Andrei Del Rosario, a student in 麻豆原创鈥檚 School of Nursing. 鈥淓ach simulation brings us one step closer to becoming compassionate and trusted healthcare professionals.鈥

麻豆原创 State鈥檚 School of Nursing offers flexible scheduling options for students with its full-time and part-time track options, as well as pre and post-licensure BSN programs. 麻豆原创 State strives to be an institution that breaks down the barriers to obtaining a college degree, which is why it introduced a night shift cohort at the start of the Spring 2024 semester. This option will help students who are unable to attend classes during traditional hours.

鈥淥ur accomplishment serves as a testament to our dedication to our students as we strive to deliver top-tier healthcare education, enabling them to thrive in the community upon graduation,鈥 said Dr. DeRionne Pollard, president of 麻豆原创. 鈥淲e are pleased to have gained provisional accreditation and anticipate achieving full accreditation for the simulation center within the next couple of years.鈥

Despite COVID-19 challenges, 麻豆原创 State College announced that 50 students within its School of Nursing all secured passing scores in September鈥檚 National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Registered Nurses that resulted in a 100 percent first-time passing rate.

鈥淥ur department is extremely proud of our nursing students who have continued to stay dedicated to their studies, despite COVID-19 setbacks, and pass the rigorous NCLEX on their first try,鈥 said June Eastridge, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE, COI, Dean for the School of Nursing at 麻豆原创 State College.

As one of the state鈥檚 largest contributors of nursing graduates who go on to secure nursing positions within our valley鈥檚 healthcare system, 麻豆原创 State College鈥檚 School of Nursing continues to hold impressive NCLEX passing rates. This year鈥檚 third quarter testing results showed a 95.09 percent passing rate for 125 first-time test takers.

鈥淭hese impressive testing results are a testament not only to the dedication of our students but also to the dedication of our faculty who have remained committed to providing quality learning experiences and educational support throughout our COVID-19 response and transition,鈥 said Vickie Shields, 麻豆原创 State’s provost and executive vice president.

麻豆原创 State鈥檚 School of Nursing continues to be nationally recognized for the quality of its nursing program with the most recent recognition from which recognized 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 as one of the best in the nation.

This semester marks the start of NSC’s first Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program, in conjunction with the University of 麻豆原创 School of Medicine (UNSOM), for students interested in medical school. According to UNSOM, the Post-Baccalaureate Program is a structured, one-year certificate program designed for students who have finished a bachelor’s degree but are not academically competitive for medical school due to grades, coursework, or extended time since degree completion. The program was designed for students who need GPA improvement, MCAT preparation, or additional upper division science coursework to be competitive for medical school admissions.
UNSOM began the program two years ago at UNR, but this year they opened the program to a second cohort of students that can participate in southern 麻豆原创 through 麻豆原创 State College. UNSOM considers several criteria for selection, including an overall undergraduate GPA between 2.85 and 3.4, or a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 30 credits of college coursework. Applicants must also have a conferred bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and must demonstrate significant clinical and community service experience. In addition, preference is given to 麻豆原创 residents who identify as a member of a disadvantaged, underserved, or underrepresented population in health care. Those populations include:

  • 1st聽generation college students
  • Students from low-income households
  • Underrepresented minorities
  • Medically underserved (typically rural) communities
  • US Military Veterans

Applicants must have completed the following prerequisites before applying to the program: 15 credits in the biological sciences; 8 credits in general chemistry; 8 credits in organic chemistry; 8 credits in general physics; 3 credits in psychology.
Once selected for the Post-Baccalaureate program, students must meet several program requirements to be admitted to UNSOM as a medical student. Students are required to complete 32 credits within two semesters, including a summer MCAT preparation course; must maintain a minimum of a 3.3 overall GPA; and must complete the MCAT with a minimum composite score of 26 with no sub-score lower than a 7. Students who meet those requirements will be eligible to interview for UNSOM’s early admissions seats; the University of 麻豆原创 School of Medicine reserves as much as 10% of its incoming class for successful graduates of the Post-Baccalaureate Program.
For the five students taking part in the NSC program, they have their work cut out for them. Accepted students take approximately 16 credits per semester in upper-division biology, biochemistry, public health, and other related subjects. The course load and schedule is very rigorous the program is intended to mimic the intensity of medical school to prepare the students for the difficult work ahead, according to UNSOM.
Programs of study are created individually for each student based on their academic needs. Students are also required to attend bi-weekly team-based-learning seminars as well as monthly advising meetings throughout the year. At the end of the academic year, students take an intensive MCAT preparation course before they take the test in mid-late summer.
Vice Provost of Scholarship and Experiential Curriculum, Dr. Robin Cresiski, worked with UNSOM to set up the certificate program at NSC, and believes this program gives NSC students a competitive edge. So many of our students have had to overcome life obstacles while in college and didn’t have the time to build the resume required to get into medical school, Dr. Cresiski said. This program gives them a second chance to focus on mastering the intensive study skills and foundational knowledge they all need to have a more competitive application and, importantly, a more successful medical school experience.

On Wednesday, Sept. 17, representatives from the NSC School of Nursing went before the 麻豆原创 State Board of Nursing to gain approval for the expansion of their program. The School of Nursing leadership team presented their plan, which includes adding more students and updating the curriculum. Dr. Neal Rosenburg, Dean of the School of Nursing, led the effort, which stemmed from the school’s proposal for growth. After a unanimous vote by the board, NSC’s request was approved.
Currently in the School of Nursing, there is a Regular Track program, a Part-time Track program, and an Accelerated Track program. The school accepts 16 students per track throughout the year. In the revised curriculum, the Accelerated Track program will be phased out, and the School of Nursing will begin accepting more students for the Part-Time and Regular Track programs.
We took the best elements from the Accelerated Track and the Regular Track, and put them in the revised curriculum, Dr. Rosenburg said. The School of Nursing will introduce the revised curriculum next semester, effective Spring 2015 for all incoming students. Incoming students from the Fall 2014 semester (and before) will be taught the current curriculum.
According to Dr. Rosenburg, the school’s growth will be incremental. In the Spring 2015 semester, enrollment will increase to 32 Part-Time Track students and 32 Regular Track students, which is double the current amount. By Fall 2015, there will be 48 students in each category, for a total of 96. That’s three times the current number of Part-Time and Regular Track students. Additionally, starting in the Summer of 2015, the School of Nursing will begin admitting Part-Time students (48) for summer classes. The Fall 2015 semester will set a record for the School of Nursing, as that is the most students ever enrolled at one time in the school’s history.
We鈥檙e doing this to answer student鈥檚 needs, Dr. Rosenburg explained. We have a waitlist of qualified applicants. With these changes, we鈥檙e accommodating more qualified students than ever. Dr. Rosenburg believes the timing is perfect, since the opening of the new buildings during the summer of 2015 will provide the space for more students.
By providing more opportunities for students, we鈥檙e providing a valuable service to the community, Dr. Rosenburg stated. Most of our students stay in Southern 麻豆原创 and work, so we are helping offset the nursing shortage.
To prepare for the enrollment increase, the School of Nursing is hiring a Director of Academic Success and Retention. This position will provide additional support services to students, addressing those students who need the extra attention and support. As the student-to-teacher ratio will no longer be 16:1, the School of Nursing aims to ensure that no one gets overlooked or falls behind.
Other efforts to address the school’s growth include recruiting full-time clinical instructors for the Fall 2015 semester.
Dr. Rosenburg is excited about the upcoming changes and looks forward to welcoming new students to the school’s growing population. This is a great thing, not just for us, but for NSC and the entire community, he expressed. By doing this, we’re producing some of the most talented and exceptionally-prepared nurses in Southern 麻豆原创.

May was a good month for the 麻豆原创 State College (NSC) School of Nursing. With the annual pinning ceremony on May 9th, during National Nurses Week (May 6-12), a 100 percent pass rate of 麻豆原创 State students on the nursing licensure exam, and the hire of new Dean & Associate Professor Dr. Neal Rosenburg, the School of Nursing has a lot to celebrate.
The School of Nursing is vibrant, growing and exceptionally successful in preparing students for not only the NCLEX exam upon graduation, said Dr. Rosenburg, but also in providing the students with the essential tools to become good stewards of health care in our clinical and community settings.
Recently, the first quarter 麻豆原创 NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) exam results showed a 100 percent pass rate among all NSC School of Nursing students. In 2013, the school boasted a 93.42 percent for the entire year.
Professor Ruby Wertz is the Assistant Dean of the Accelerated and Part-time tracks in the School of Nursing. She attributes the school’s perfect pass rate to the diligence of their faculty. I don’t think there’s one particular person that makes this happen, Professor Wertz shared. All of the faculty members make an effort to make sure all students not only understand the information but are able to apply it in a clinical setting.
As the new Dean, Dr. Rosenburg hopes to add to the school’s development and success. Rosenburg comes from a very comprehensive background in the medical field, having worked and done research at numerous institutions, including Linfield College, Goldfarb School of Nursing and Washington University School of Medicine. Rosenburg says he is looking forward to bringing his knowledge and expertise to NSC. I would love to share my passion for global nursing among vulnerable populations with our students and faculty he said. Our students crave global experiential learning endeavors. We can make this happen for them. This is exciting, he added.
School of Nursing leadership believes the school continues to thrive due to both exceptional faculty and a unique approach. NSC, a young educational institution, offers a very nimble environment of operations as opposed to traditionally cumbersome, archaic processes to enact change within educational systems, Dr. Rosenburg noted. Professor Wertz agreed, saying, NSC is different from other institutions because we re based on a caring philosophy. We have small enough cohorts where we can take students individually and help them be successful.
Professor Wertz also credits ATI (Assessment Technologies Institute), a comprehensive assessment and review program utilized to prepare students for NCLEX, and the school’s NCLEX and transition to practice prep courses. It’s important to us to make ourselves available to students, she expressed. To not only teach them but help guide and prepare them to be the nurses they want to be.

Each year, the聽聽(NHA) opens the essay contest to nurses, educators, and nursing students throughout 麻豆原创. A total of 38 submissions were received this year in categories including Professional Development, Attraction, and Commitment/Retention. Perry was recognized for her writings in the area of Commitment/Retention.
Describing her philosophy on student development and patient care Perry wrote in her essay, we must seize the opportunity to share with students the art of nursing through random acts of kindness to our patients, to our students and to our peers Nursing instructors, mentors, and preceptors are given the amazing opportunity to truly mold our future nurses. Perry went on to highlight her joy in working closely with students as they learn both the art and science of the profession.
Representatives of the NHA presented Perry with her awards, including a commemorative Florence Nightingale lamp, during a visit to the NSC campus on August 20.
Joining the NSC School of Nursing in 2010, Perry served the institution as a part-time faculty member while also working as a school nursing within the Clark County School District. In the fall of 2012, Perry transitioned into a full-time faculty member position, teaching health assessment to first-semester nursing students and maternity to those in their second semester.
Being able to merge my love for teaching with my love for maternity nursing is a dream come true for me, added Perry. While I have missed my time as a nurse in labor and delivery, my current role affords me the best of both worlds.

麻豆原创 State College Nursing Lecturer Susan Growe has been designated by the聽(NCSBN) to serve on the 2013 item writing panel for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Nursing faculty members and clinicians from across the country are invited to apply for the volunteer positions each year; however, a limited number are selected from each state to participate on the prestigious panel.
Growe will travel to Chicago this August to contribute to the weeklong writing conference.
It’s an honor to have been chosen to represent both our state and 麻豆原创 State College on the NCLEX-RN item writing panel, said Growe. Every nurse in the nation is required to take this exam prior to beginning work and I鈥檓 delighted to provide my input and help uphold a standard of excellence in our field. Writing for the exam has been on my bucket list since I began teaching.
Participants on the panel will work closely as a group to develop questions referencing nursing course materials commonly utilized in all states. Questions submitted by the panel will go through an item review committee, followed by a panel of judges that will recommend final exam questions to the NCSBN Board of Directors.
罢丑别听聽is very proud and excited for Professor Growe as she takes on this leadership role, added Interim Dean Sherrilyn Coffman. The knowledge she will gain during her experience on the panel will benefit both our students and faculty.
BSN graduates completing the six-hour NCLEX-RN are required to complete a minimum of 75 item questions with a maximum of 265, based on computer adaptive testing. Approximately 15 experimental questions, or new questions developed by the annual item writing panel, are included in the exam each year.
RNs in 麻豆原创 are only required to pass the NCLEX-RN once; however, they must maintain their license by completing 30 continuing education units (CEUs) every two years. Individuals participating on the NCLEX-RN item writing panel, including Growe, will earn 32 CEUs.
Through my experience on the writing panel, I will be able to prepare our students for the licensure exam by exposing them to NCLEX-RN level questions throughout the curriculum and coursework at NSC, Growe commented.
In order to maintain the integrity of the exam, faculty participants are unable to share details on the item writing conference, question writing techniques, or sample questions with colleagues or students in the classroom for three years after their participation. However, once the provisional period has passed, participants are free to present details of their experience with other faculty members in order to inform future test questions developed for college coursework.
Currently working towards a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree at Touro University of 麻豆原创, Growe has been a member of the NSC School of Nursing faculty for seven years. Her course offerings include fundamentals for first semester students and pathophysiology.
My favorite part of the nursing profession is patient care and interaction, added Growe. I also love teaching, and as a faculty member at NSC, I have the opportunity to interact with patients and students during clinicals. It’s the best of both worlds.
Growe additional serves as the Director at Large for the 麻豆原创 Nurses Association and the Vice President of the Zeta Kappa Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.
The pass rate for NSC nursing graduates completing the NCLEX-RN during the first quarter of 2013 was 100%.

Providing an efficient and seamless pathway for Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) students to also complete a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, 麻豆原创 State College (NSC) and聽聽(TMCC) have partnered to form a collaborative nursing program. With the completion of a new articulation agreement, the program will admit its first students during the fall 2013 semester.
We are pleased to work with TMCC in order to provide quality educational opportunities for our students and future nurses, said NSC President Bart Patterson. Together, we will develop a highly-educated nursing workforce in 麻豆原创 to meet the State’s focus on building and expanding the healthcare sector.
The development of the program is in response to the recommendation by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) for registered nurses (RNs) across the nation to complete their bachelor’s degree within 10 years of receiving their ADN. 罢丑别听聽report released by IOM in 2010 also encourages 80 percent of nurses to become baccalaureate prepared by 2020.
According to the IOM report, approximately 50 percent of nurses across the nation have completed their BSN and in 麻豆原创, that percentage is closer to 42, said Sherrilyn Coffman, interim dean of the NSC School of Nursing. Additionally, it is estimated that 麻豆原创 will be 30 percent short of the projected RN demand by 2020.
After successfully completing their first semester in the ADN program, TMCC students will be eligible to apply for provisional admission into the聽. Accepted students will then be required to complete at least one general education course at NSC each year while working on their two-year degree. Students will also need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) prior to full admission to NSC.
The RN to BSN program at NSC began in 2004. All post-licensure nursing courses are offered online with content designed for current RNs. Over 150 students were enrolled in the program during the 2012-2013 year. With the addition of the TMCC articulation agreement, enrollment is projected to increase to 425 by 2021.
Our partnership with NSC will not only benefit students but will meet the emerging needs of the healthcare industry, said TMCC President Maria C. Sheehan. Together, we look forward to the growth and success of the program.
Students in the聽聽may contact the NSC Transfer Coordinator for additional program details by emailing聽erin.hall@nsc.edu聽or by calling 702-992-2118.

Applying their pediatric knowledge and skills in a real-world setting, a group of 麻豆原创 State College (NSC) nursing students joined the medical staff team at the annual聽听(狈顿础)听聽on March 26. Supervised by聽聽Dean Sherrilyn Coffman, the volunteers assisted the NDA by monitoring blood sugar levels and insulin injections for campers age 6-14; and by providing necessary first aid and supervision during camp activities.
The NDA offers Camp Vegas each year in support of children, youth, and families living with diabetes. During the weeklong event, campers take part in arts and crafts and outdoor activities while also learning how to manage type 1 diabetes. Campers are taught how to check their blood sugar levels prior to meals, count the number of carbohydrates consumed during meals, and take the appropriate amount of insulin afterwards.
Held just outside of Las Vegas at Mt. Potisi, the 2013 camp was held March 25-29. This year, NSC camp volunteers included students in the part-time nursing program: Christabell Alquizalas, Ellen Kim, and Estelle DeMesa; regular track student Abigail Atfield; as well as pre-nursing student Aaron Rosenbaum.
Volunteering is a great way to get more hands-on experience as a nursing student, shared Alquizalas. It’s great because it lets you provide patient care that differs from the traditional hospital setting. The environment is completely different, so it gives you a different perspective of care.
Alquizalas plans to complete her Bachelors of Science in Nursing in May 2013 and has volunteered at Camp Vegas for two years in a row. You can really tell that these kids and their counselors have formed a cohesive family bond and it is nice to see such a great support system, she continued.
Nursing student volunteers work closely with Coffman and the camp’s medical staff and must have knowledge of diabetes care including different insulin types, regimens, and injection methods.
Our students were responsible for reviewing doctor鈥檚 insulin orders, providing campers with the appropriate insulin pen, monitoring injections, and documenting when shots were completed, said Coffman. Camp Vegas is a great opportunity for our students to enhance their nursing skills and experience with patients while also becoming active in serving our community.
Coffman helped found the NDA Southern Board in 2002 and currently serves at the Secretary of both the Southern Board and the State Board. From 1999 through 2012, she additionally served as the camp’s head nurse.
