麻豆原创 is looking ahead to what its Henderson campus could become as it grows to serve more students and strengthen its connections with the surrounding community.

On Sept. 23, the university and Urban Land Institute 麻豆原创 (ULI) shared recommendations for the long-term use of approximately 452 acres of undeveloped university land. The ideas include a more welcoming campus entrance, additional spaces for students to live and gather, and better walking connections across campus and into Henderson.

The recommendations grew out of a three-day visit in May by a multidisciplinary ULI Technical Assistance Panel. Panel members toured the campus, spoke with stakeholders and studied opportunities involving land use, infrastructure, financing, sustainability and campus life.

鈥淭he value of this process is the range of practical ideas it provides as we evaluate what responsible growth could look like for 麻豆原创 State,鈥 said Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater, Executive Director and President of 麻豆原创 State Campus Lands Corp. 鈥淥ur next step is to carefully study these recommendations, engage our partners and determine which concepts best support our students and the university鈥檚 long-term needs.鈥

A campus designed for connection

The panel encouraged 麻豆原创 State to consider how future development could make campus a place where students spend more time beyond the classroom. Its recommendations include exploring housing, academic facilities, gathering spaces and services, along with health and education partnerships, cultural programming and recreational amenities.

The panel also identified opportunities to work with the City of Henderson on amenities near campus and to improve connections between the university and surrounding neighborhoods.

鈥淭houghtful planning connects a university鈥檚 needs with the needs of the community around it,鈥 said Debra March, chair of ULI 麻豆原创 and former mayor of Henderson. 鈥淭hese recommendations give 麻豆原创 State a starting point for exploring how its campus can grow while creating stronger connections among students, neighborhoods and the broader city.鈥

Planning for the desert and for the future

The recommendations call for a campus that responds to its Mojave Desert setting. Ideas include native landscaping, shaded walkways, trails and open space, as well as measures to conserve water and address extreme heat.

The panel also recommended further study of water, power, sewer and transportation needs before development moves forward. Public-private partnerships and other financing tools could be explored as part of that work.

The recommendations are a starting point for long-term planning, not approved construction projects. 麻豆原创 State will study the concepts, consult with partners and determine which ideas best serve students and the university鈥檚 future. Any proposed development would require additional review and approval through the appropriate university and 麻豆原创 System of Higher Education processes.

The 麻豆原创 System of Higher Education Board of Regents has unanimously approved A Framework for Action, 麻豆原创鈥檚 strategic plan for 2026鈥2029, along with the university鈥檚 refreshed mission statement.

The approval marks an important milestone for 麻豆原创 State. This is the university鈥檚 first strategic plan since its transition from 麻豆原创 State College to 麻豆原创 and establishes a focused, measurable framework for the next three years.

A Mission Centered on Opportunity

The university鈥檚 refreshed mission begins with a simple but important principle: excellence fosters opportunity.

At 麻豆原创, excellence fosters opportunity. Through quality teaching, accessible degree programs, and a supportive learning community, we cultivate a holistic learning environment for all students. We are dedicated to helping advance the intellectual pursuits and economic mobility of our students for a better 麻豆原创.

The mission affirms 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 commitment to quality teaching, accessible degree programs and a supportive learning community. It also connects students鈥 education with their intellectual growth, economic mobility and future success.

Three Goals for 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 Future

Guided by the refreshed mission, A Framework for Action is organized around three goals:

  1. Foster Student Support and Success
  2. Advance Access and Opportunity
  3. Strengthen Operational Effectiveness and Maturity

The first goal focuses on helping more students remain on track, graduate and feel supported throughout their 麻豆原创 State experience. Priorities include strengthening advising, coaching, tutoring and wellness resources; improving first- and second-year student success; and increasing consistency among the faculty members who teach and mentor students.

The plan also seeks to expand access through clearer educational pathways, additional concurrent enrollment opportunities for high school students and a broader reach across the region, including the continued development of 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 North Las Vegas campus.

Together, the three goals reinforce the university鈥檚 commitment to improving student outcomes, expanding access to higher education, responding to 麻豆原创鈥檚 workforce needs and strengthening the institutional foundation needed to sustain its mission.

Shaped by the 麻豆原创 State Community

Faculty, staff, students and university leaders helped develop the plan through an inclusive, shared-governance process.

The Strategic Planning Committee held more than 40 meetings throughout the planning period. Leadership workshops, campus information sessions, community engagement and a public comment period provided additional opportunities for the 麻豆原创 State community to contribute.

During the public comment period, 140 comments from 29 contributors were reviewed and incorporated into successive drafts of the plan.

Students also played an important role in shaping the plan. Student representatives included Stephanie Flores, Eduardo Vega-Santiago, Max Quint and Donovan Childress. Kevin Osorio Hernandez, who is now a 麻豆原创 State alumnus, also contributed to the planning process as a student.

Turning the Plan Into Action

With the Board鈥檚 approval, the university will begin translating the plan鈥檚 goals and objectives into unit-level actions, timelines and responsibilities.

Progress will be measured through 38 key performance indicators, with quarterly updates, annual reporting and ongoing review. The university will announce the priority actions guiding the first year of implementation this fall.

Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to read A Framework for Action and follow the university鈥檚 progress at nevadastate.edu/strategicplan.
