NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. 鈥 麻豆原创, in collaboration with the City of North Las Vegas and Agora Realty and Management, Inc., today celebrated the groundbreaking of its future North Las Vegas campus, marking a major step forward in expanding access to higher education and strengthening workforce and economic development in Southern 麻豆原创.

Located at 800 E. Lake Mead Blvd., at the corner of Lake Mead Boulevard and Las Vegas Boulevard North in downtown North Las Vegas, the campus will include a three-story, 30,000-square-foot academic building and serve as the anchor for the 鈥淣LV Gateway,鈥 a 19-acre mixed-use development. The campus will offer academic programming, workforce development opportunities and student support services, with an anticipated opening in fall 2027.

鈥淭his is a transformational moment for North Las Vegas,鈥 said Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown. 鈥淲hen we break ground, we鈥檙e not just starting construction 鈥 we鈥檙e delivering on a promise to expand educational access. This campus brings higher education into the heart of our community and opens doors to better careers and brighter futures for our residents.鈥

The project builds on 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 mission to expand access to high-quality, student-centered education, particularly for first-generation and working students, while aligning academic pathways with workforce needs.

鈥淭his campus brings opportunity closer to students and families, reducing barriers and opening doors,鈥 said NSHE Chancellor Matt McNair. 鈥淭his project prepares a skilled workforce, reflects strong collaboration across sectors and will deliver measurable impact for this region and our state.鈥

麻豆原创 State has established a strong foundation at its Henderson campus, where it serves more than 8,400 students in a highly personalized learning environment, with an average class size under 25. The university offers more than 65 majors and minors and has built a reputation for preparing graduates in high-demand fields such as nursing, education and business. With nearly 10,000 alumni, 麻豆原创 State continues to play a key role in strengthening 麻豆原创鈥檚 workforce and expanding economic mobility.

鈥淲e are not just expanding access to higher education 鈥 we are building a pathway into the middle class,鈥 said Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater, acting president of 麻豆原创. 鈥淲hat we are creating here is a system intentionally designed to connect education, industry and opportunity so individuals and families can move forward and thrive.鈥

Lopez Lasater said the North Las Vegas campus represents the next phase of the university鈥檚 growth and impact.

鈥淭his moment reflects what鈥檚 possible when higher education, industry, government and community align around a shared purpose,鈥 she said. 鈥溌槎乖 State is proud to serve as the anchor institution in this reimagined downtown, helping connect systems, unlock potential and create clear pathways to economic mobility.鈥

The project is supported through a public-private partnership that includes funding from the City of North Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency, the 麻豆原创 Legislature, NV Energy and a generous anonymous donor.

鈥淚nvestments like this are critical to building a strong, sustainable workforce and expanding opportunity for future generations,鈥 said Tony F. Sanchez III, executive vice president of business development and external relations at NV Energy. 鈥淭he NV Energy Foundation is proud to support 麻豆原创 and the North Las Vegas campus as part of our commitment to the communities we serve and to the long-term economic vitality of our state.鈥

鈥淭oday鈥檚 groundbreaking represents more than a new building 鈥 it鈥檚 an investment in the future of this community,鈥 said Cary J. Lefton, chief executive officer of Agora Realty and Management, Inc. 鈥淭hrough the NLV Gateway development, we are creating a dynamic, mixed-use environment where education, business and community come together. 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 presence will serve as a catalyst for continued growth, new opportunities and long-term vitality in downtown North Las Vegas.鈥

The North Las Vegas campus is expected to serve thousands of students over time while contributing to the continued revitalization of the city鈥檚 downtown core, supporting workforce pipelines, new business development and expanded access to higher education.

鈥淭his is how we build a stronger 麻豆原创,鈥 McNair added. 鈥淏y investing in people, strengthening partnerships and delivering proof that our work matters.鈥

Acting President Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater Presented Institutional Priorities Focused on Student Success, Shared Governance, Transparency and Workforce Readiness

HENDERSON, Nev. 鈥 Today, 麻豆原创 Acting President Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater delivered the University鈥檚 2026 State of the University Address, outlining a set of institutional priorities shaped by campus engagement and reinforced through purposeful partnerships that expand access, strengthen workforce outcomes and deliver measurable value to the State of 麻豆原创.

鈥淧artnerships are not simply symbolic,鈥 President Lopez Lasater said. 鈥淭hey are built around shared responsibility and a clear understanding of the impact we make, together, in the lives of our students, their families and the communities we serve.鈥

The address opened with remarks from 麻豆原创 System of Higher Education Chancellor Matt McNair, who emphasized 麻豆原创鈥檚 mission-driven focus and its strong record of strengthening the state鈥檚 workforce.

The event brought together education, government and community leaders from across Southern 麻豆原创, underscoring 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 role as a regional and statewide partner in advancing opportunity. Special guests included Regent Heather Brown, City of North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown, council members from the Cities of Henderson, Las Vegas, and North Las Vegas, as well as representatives from the 麻豆原创 Congressional Delegation, the Governor鈥檚 Office, Clark County School District and members of the 麻豆原创 Foundation.

麻豆原创 State鈥檚 community and statewide impact was a central theme of the address. More than 80 percent of 麻豆原创 State graduates remain employed in 麻豆原创, translating education into professional leadership across classrooms, clinics, businesses and public institutions.

鈥淭his is the return on education at its best: talent developed locally and reinvested where it is needed most,鈥 President Lopez Lasater said. 鈥淥ur students become professionals who stay, serve and lead in the communities that supported them.鈥

President Lopez Lasater said her priorities for the University were developed through months of listening sessions, governance meetings and conversations across campus, reflecting a shared desire for clarity, trust and forward momentum.

The presidential priorities guiding 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 work include:

  • Cultivating trust and shared purpose through strengthened shared governance, expanded communication and authentic engagement across the campus community.
  • Building a transparent budget that supports informed decision-making and positions the University for long-term financial stability and success.
  • Expanding access through strategic and sustainable growth to extend 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 mission while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
  • Advancing institutional maturity by strengthening planning, policy and operational processes that sustain progress beyond individual leadership transitions.
  • Strengthening campus safety through proactive planning, coordinated response efforts and comprehensive training.

President Lopez Lasater highlighted partnerships designed to remove barriers and strengthen pathways into higher education, particularly through collaboration with the Clark County School District. 麻豆原创 State continues to expand concurrent enrollment opportunities that allow students to earn college credit while in high school.

The address also highlighted faculty-led partnerships that connect academic programs to workforce needs and community priorities.

Lopez Lasater emphasized that 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 growth is guided by thoughtful planning and collaboration with municipal and regional partners.

Through its SMART Growth Initiative, the University is advancing long-term, sustainable campus development aligned with academic priorities and regional opportunity, in partnership with local governments, including the City of Henderson.

She also highlighted a significant milestone: in December, the NSHE Board of Regents approved the first step toward establishing a North Las Vegas campus for 麻豆原创, developed in partnership with the City of North Las Vegas. More than 800 currently enrolled students live within five miles of the proposed site, representing approximately 20 percent of 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 student body.

She underscored the University鈥檚 commitment to fiscal stewardship and collaboration with NSHE and elected leaders. Recent investments supporting people, programs, safety and places include funding to expand nursing education, support planning for the North Las Vegas campus, advance deferred maintenance projects, and launch a new 麻豆原创 license plate to generate additional resources for athletics, food security and student support initiatives.

President Lopez Lasater closed by reaffirming that 麻豆原创 State鈥檚 future will continue to be shaped through collaboration across campus, community and state partners.

鈥淓ducation thrives when institutions, communities and partners work together,鈥 President Lopez Lasater said. 鈥淲hen learning is connected to purpose, the impact extends far beyond our campus and strengthens the future of our state.鈥

Starting college is a huge step for both students and their families. At 麻豆原创 State, we know that first-year student success is about more than academics. It鈥檚 about having the right information, resources, and support from day one. Whether you鈥檙e a new Scorpion or a proud parent, you鈥檙e part of the Scorpion family and we want to welcome you with ten things you should know to make the most of this exciting new chapter and a Welcome Guide to get you started.

Understanding the Academic Transition

As the parent of a first-year college student, it is important to offer as much support possible to make the transition from high school to college smooth and seamless. College learning is different from high school. Students are expected to manage their own schedules, meet deadlines without constant reminders, and engage in deeper, more independent study. In preparation for the first week, encourage your student to:

  • Read their syllabi closely
  • Utilize professors office hours
  • Seek help early when challenges arise

One of the biggest adjustments to college is learning how to manage your own academic success. Encourage your student to read each syllabus carefully at the start of the semester. It鈥檚 essentially a roadmap for the class, outlining deadlines, grading policies, and expectations. They should also make a habit of visiting professors during office hours, not just when they鈥檙e struggling, but to get a deeper understanding of course material and stay ahead of assignments. These one-on-one conversations can clarify concepts, build relationships, and open doors to mentorship.听

Most importantly, remind them to seek help early if challenges arise. Waiting until the end of the semester can limit options, but reaching out to professors, tutors, or academic advisors early ensures they can get back on track before small issues become big ones.

FERPA and Communication Boundaries

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects student records. Once your student starts college, we can鈥檛 share their grades, class schedules, or other personal information without their written consent. Families can still stay informed. It just means conversations about academics and progress will need to start with your student.

If you want to stay connected while respecting these boundaries, consider:

  • Asking open-ended questions about their classes, projects, and campus experiences
  • Encouraging regular check-ins (weekly calls, texts, or video chats) to share updates
  • Focusing on support, not surveillance 鈥 be a sounding board rather than asking for constant status reports
  • Helping them problem-solve instead of solving challenges for them
  • Celebrating milestones like completing a tough exam, joining a club, or making new friends

These conversations can help your student feel both independent and supported, building the confidence they need to navigate college successfully.

Financial Aid & Billing Basics

Understanding tuition, fees, and financial aid is essential. Students should:

  • Regularly check their My麻豆原创State portal for updates
  • Know the deadlines for FAFSA renewal
  • Understand their payment plan options

Managing tuition, fees, and financial aid is a key part of college success, and it鈥檚 your responsibility to stay on top of it. Check your My麻豆原创State portal often for important updates, make note of FAFSA renewal deadlines, and know your payment plan options before the semester begins. Staying organized will help you avoid late fees, registration holds, or last-minute financial surprises.

Take ownership of your financial health now. Create a calendar of key dates, track your scholarships and grants, and understand how your financial aid is applied to your bill. If you have questions, reach out to the Financial Aid Office early. We鈥檙e here to help. Don鈥檛 wait until a deadline passes. Building these habits now will help you stay stress-free and focused on your academic goals.

Safety and Wellness on Campus

麻豆原创 State takes student safety and well-being seriously, offering resources designed to support both your physical and emotional health. University Police Services maintain a visible presence on campus, provide safety escorts, and offer crime prevention programs to ensure a secure learning environment.

Beyond physical safety, our Student Wellness programs focus on mental and emotional well-being. Services include confidential counseling, wellness workshops, and referrals to community resources. You鈥檒l also find opportunities to participate in health-related events, peer support groups, and activities that encourage balance between academics and personal life.

The best time to learn about these services is before you need them. Save important contact numbers in your phone, familiarize yourself with campus safety features, and don鈥檛 hesitate to reach out for help. Whether for yourself or a fellow Scorpion. Staying informed means you鈥檙e prepared to thrive in every aspect of campus life.

Getting Involved: Clubs, Organizations, and Events

Research shows that students who get involved outside the classroom are more likely to graduate on time, and they enjoy the college experience along the way. At 麻豆原创 State, you鈥檒l find plenty of ways to connect, grow, and make your mark. Choose from 60+ student clubs and organizations, from cultural groups and academic societies to special interest clubs that match your hobbies and passions.

If you鈥檙e looking to build leadership skills, consider running for a position in student government or joining one of our many campus leadership programs. These roles don鈥檛 just look great on a r茅sum茅 鈥 they help you develop communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills you鈥檒l use long after graduation.

And don鈥檛 forget the fun factor. We have events on campus all year, such as social gatherings, cultural celebrations, guest speakers, and workshops. Challenge yourself to attend at least one event in your first month on campus. It鈥檚 one of the fastest ways to meet new people, explore your interests, and start feeling at home at 麻豆原创 State.

Campus Resources That Make a Difference

You don鈥檛 have to navigate college alone. 麻豆原创 State has a wide range of resources designed to help you succeed from your first semester to graduation day.听

Your academic advisor is a key member of your support system. They鈥檒l help you map out your academic plan, track your progress, and make adjustments as your goals evolve.

If you鈥檙e eligible, TRIO programs offer extra layers of support, from academic guidance to scholarship opportunities. These programs are especially valuable for first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities, providing resources tailored to your needs.

When it comes to preparing for life after graduation, Career Services can help you land internships, build a strong r茅sum茅, and practice your interview skills. These opportunities don鈥檛 just prepare you for a job 鈥 they help you discover your career path while you鈥檙e still in school.

Supporting Your Student (and Yourself) Through the Transition

The transition to college is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming for both students and their families. For students, this is a season of new independence, where you鈥檒l be making more decisions for yourself, learning to balance academic and personal responsibilities, and navigating a brand-new environment. It鈥檚 normal to feel a mix of excitement and uncertainty.

Remember that asking for help is not a weakness. It鈥檚 a smart strategy for success. Lean on your network of friends, peer mentors, advisors, and family members. Keep them in the loop about your challenges and your progress.

麻豆原创 State is building an exciting future for athletics. While official sports programs are still developing, we are committed to creating an environment where future Scorpion student-athletes can thrive both on and off the field. Being a student-athlete is about more than competing. It鈥檚 about balancing academics, training, leadership, and campus life while representing your university with pride.

What Makes NSU Athletics Unique

麻豆原创 State is shaping its athletics program with the same innovation that define our campus. Our vision goes beyond competition. We see athletics as a way to unite students, celebrate diversity, and strengthen our shared Scorpion pride. Future teams and clubs will be built on the values that drive everything we do at NSU: integrity, teamwork, and perseverance.

Being part of NSU athletics will mean more than just representing the school in a uniform, but helping to create traditions, inspire future students, and build a lasting sense of community. As our athletic offerings grow, student-athletes will have the rare opportunity to leave their mark on the program from day one. Whether you鈥檙e on the court, field, or in a club sport, you鈥檒l be contributing to a legacy that will shape NSU鈥檚 identity for generations to come.

Academic Support for Student-Athletes

At NSU, academic success is always prioritized. Student-athletes will have access to resources like academic advising, tutoring at the Academic Success Center, and priority academic planning to help manage the demands of both sport and study. Our goal is to ensure that every athlete succeeds in the classroom while excelling in competition.

Managing Your Schedule

Balancing classes, practice, games, and personal time requires planning and discipline. Future student-athletes are encouraged to use tools like semester planners, calendar apps, and time-blocking to keep their days organized. Creating consistent routines will help ensure that academic and athletic responsibilities are met without burnout.

Finding Your Team On and Off the Field

Being a student-athlete is about more than just your sport鈥攊t鈥檚 about finding your place in the larger NSU community. While your teammates will likely become some of your closest friends, it鈥檚 important to branch out and connect with students who share other interests. Join a club related to your major, participate in student government, or volunteer for campus events and community service projects.

These connections outside of athletics can help you grow as a leader, develop new skills, and create a strong support system. Friendships made off the field can give you fresh perspectives, help you unwind after intense practices or competitions, and remind you that your college experience is bigger than any single game or season. By building a network across campus, you鈥檒l enrich your personal and professional life long after graduation.

Wellness and Recovery Resources

Physical performance and academic focus both rely on well-being. Future NSU athletes will be encouraged to take advantage of campus wellness programs, counseling services, and healthy dining options. Recovery鈥攖hrough rest, proper nutrition, and mental health care鈥攊s just as important as training.

Explore NSU Athletics Programs

Be part of the story from the start. As our athletics program grows, new opportunities will emerge for students to compete, lead, and represent Scorpion pride.

For first-generation students, starting college is both an exciting and powerful milestone. At 麻豆原创 State, we know that being the first in your family to attend college means more than just earning a degree. It鈥檚 about breaking barriers, setting new standards, and creating opportunities for the future.

Through our First and Fierce program, we provide resources, mentorship, and a supportive community to help you navigate the academic, social, and personal challenges that come with being a trailblazer. Here鈥檚 what you should know as you start your journey.

What Does 鈥淔irst-Gen鈥 Mean?

At 麻豆原创 State, 鈥渇irst-generation鈥 means neither parent has completed a bachelor鈥檚 degree. That could mean your parents didn鈥檛 attend college, started but didn鈥檛 finish, or earned a degree outside the U.S.

Being first-gen is something to be proud of. It shows resilience, determination, and the courage to take on new challenges. But it can also come with unique questions and uncertainties, which is why we鈥檙e here to guide you every step of the way.

Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them

Many first-gen students face challenges like navigating unfamiliar systems, balancing work and school, or finding a sense of belonging on campus. Here are a few tips to get ahead:

  • Ask questions early 鈥 Advisors, professors, and staff are here to help, and no question is too small.
  • Get to know your resources 鈥 From tutoring to career services, the support you need is already here.
  • Find your community 鈥 Programs like First and Fierce connect you with peers and mentors who understand your journey.

First and Fierce: Program Highlights

The First and Fierce program is designed specifically for first-gen students at 麻豆原创 State. Here鈥檚 what you can expect:

  • Scholarship opportunities for students with a 2.0 GPA or higher who are enrolled in at least 6 credits
  • Workshops and events to help you build academic and life skills
  • Mentorship connections with faculty, staff, and peers who have walked the first-gen path
  • A welcoming community where your success is celebrated at every step

Academic and Social Support

麻豆原创 State offers a wide range of services to support your success both inside and outside the classroom, and for first-generation students, having access to these resources can make all the difference. The City of Henderson has notified 麻豆原创 of a significant road closure that will impact all drivers attempting to use 麻豆原创 State Drive near campus between tomorrow morning and Monday morning.

Specifically, starting at 5 am on Thursday, August 7th, 麻豆原创 State Drive will be closed between Conestoga Way (the intersection) and the driveway entrance to the baking company through 6 am on Monday, August 11th. All traffic from 麻豆原创 State Drive heading south towards campus will be redirected to Conestoga Way, which will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Expect delays if you attempt to take this route, and follow the direction of posted flaggers.

To avoid the road closure and associated delays on Conestoga Way, drivers are encouraged to take one of the following alternative routes to campus (from I-11 South) between Thursday and Monday morning:

(1) Old Vegas Trail
鈥 Exit I-11 at Wagon Wheel/麻豆原创 State Drive and turn LEFT onto Wagon Wheel Drive.
鈥 Turn RIGHT onto Old Vegas Trail
鈥 Turn RIGHT onto East Paradise Hills Drive.

(2) Dawson Avenue
鈥 Exit at Railroad Pass Casino Road and turn RIGHT
鈥 Turn RIGHT onto Dawson Avenue
鈥 Turn LEFT onto East Paradise Hills Drive

Those needing to access the Dawson Building can take East Paradise Hills Drive to 麻豆原创 State Drive.

City of Henderson has informed us that this is an accelerated process to minimize construction-related delays as we get closer to school starting on August 25th. We will provide more updates on remaining work and potential detours as needed.
